The transport secretary, Grant Shapps, has revealed the new green list countries, which people will be able to visit from 17 May.
He says the full list of 12 countries and territories people in England can travel to without having to quarantine upon return will include:
- Portugal
- Israel
- Singapore
- Australia
- New Zealand
- Brunei
- Iceland
- Gibraltar
- Falkland Islands
- Faroe Islands
- South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
- St Helena, Tristan de Cunha, Ascension Island
Green: Travellers must take a pre-departure test and a PCR test on or before day two of their arrival back into England.
He says the list will be reviewed every three weeks from reopening.
However, many green list countries will continue to place restrictions on UK travellers, including quarantine measures, so passengers are encouraged to check all requirements travel advice before they book any foreign travel.
Malta, which was widely expected to be on the low-risk list, has been omitted. Along with the vast majority of nations, it is rated amber.
Iceland and the Faroe Islands are on the green list, while Norway and Finland have not been included.
The countries are rated depending on the risk they are believed to pose of importing new cases and variants of coronavirus to the UK.
Arrivals from “red list” nations, including India, South Africa and Brazil, continue to be subject to 11 nights of hotel quarantine at the traveller’s expense. Non-UK residents are not allowed. Mr Shapps added Turkey, the Maldives and Nepal to the “red list,” requiring hotel quarantine.
